SS 304 vs SS 202 vs GI: Which Kitchen Basket Material Is Best?

SS 304 vs SS 202 vs GI: Which Kitchen Basket Material Is Best?

SS 304, SS 202 and GI kitchen baskets compared for rust resistance, cost and where each one should be used in a modular kitchen.

When you compare modular kitchen baskets, the first thing a dealer will ask is the material: SS 304, SS 202 or GI. They look similar when new, but they behave very differently after a few years near water, steam and salt. Here is what each one is, where it works, and how to decide.

What the names mean

SS 304 and SS 202 are grades of stainless steel. Stainless steel resists rust because it contains chromium, which forms a thin protective layer on the surface. The difference between grades is mainly in the nickel content.

  • SS 304 contains about 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. The higher nickel content gives it strong resistance to rust and staining.
  • SS 202 replaces part of the nickel with manganese. This makes it more affordable, but it is less resistant to corrosion than SS 304.
  • GI stands for galvanised iron. It is iron or mild steel coated with zinc, and baskets are often finished with a further coating. The protection lasts only as long as the coating stays intact.

SS 304 vs SS 202 vs GI at a glance

Point SS 304 SS 202 GI (coated)
Rust resistance Highest Moderate Depends on coating
Wet utensils Well suited Not ideal for constant moisture Not recommended
Coastal or humid areas Preferred May show spots over time Coating can fail early
Cost Highest Mid range Lowest
Typical use Plate, thali, cup and cutlery baskets Dry storage, containers, cookware Budget projects, light dry use

Where SS 304 is worth the price

Any basket that holds utensils straight after washing stays damp for hours every day. The same is true for cabinets close to the sink or dishwasher, and for homes in humid or coastal climates. In these places SS 304 keeps its finish far longer, and the higher price is spread over many more years of use.

Typical SS 304 positions are the plate and thali basket, the cup and saucer basket, the cutlery basket and the dish drainer above the sink.

Where SS 202 does the job

For drawers that stay dry, SS 202 is a sensible choice. Grocery containers, packed food, cookware that is dried before storing, and wardrobe accessories do not expose the steel to much moisture. Using SS 202 here lets you put the budget where it matters.

When GI makes sense

Coated GI baskets suit tight budgets, rental homes and light, dry storage. Handle them with a little care: once the coating is scratched or chipped, the metal underneath can start to rust. Avoid them for wet utensils.

How to check what you are buying

  • Ask for the grade in writing on the quotation or invoice. This is the most reliable check.
  • Look at the finish. Good stainless steel has an even colour with no dark patches around the welds.
  • Do not rely only on a magnet. SS 304 is usually not attracted to a magnet, but bending and welding can make parts of it slightly magnetic, so the magnet test alone can mislead.
  • Buy from a manufacturer or an authorised dealer who can tell you which grade each product is made in.

A mixed plan that works for most homes

  1. SS 304 for every basket that takes wet utensils and for units beside the sink.
  2. SS 202 for dry storage drawers, pull-outs for containers and tall units.
  3. GI only where the budget is fixed and the use is light and dry.

Frequently asked questions

Does SS 304 rust?

SS 304 is highly resistant to rust in normal kitchen use. It can still show surface marks if harsh chemicals such as bleach or acid cleaners are left on it, or if iron particles from steel wool are left on the surface. Regular wiping keeps it clean.

Is SS 202 good for kitchen baskets?

Yes, for dry storage. For baskets that stay wet every day, SS 304 is the better choice.

How can I tell SS 304 from SS 202?

They look almost the same. The dependable way is to ask the seller to state the grade on the invoice and to buy from a manufacturer or authorised dealer.

Which is better for a coastal city?

SS 304. Salt in the air speeds up corrosion, and SS 304 handles it better than SS 202 or coated GI.
